    A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Organizational Design Community and Organization Design Forum in the pursuit of mutual interests in the field of organization design. The ODC Board of Directors are pleased with this development and look forward to take the next step in fulfilling the agreement. 

    The parties agree to cooperate in the following areas:

    • Each organization’s annual conference;
    • Co-developing workshops on organization design topics;
    • ODF participation in ODC’s Accreditation Program;
    • Explore opportunities for collaborative activities with other professional organizations in the area of organization design.

    Visit the JOD website to read the most recent article exploring the topics of double-bind organizations, toxic communication and employee burnout: 

    “How to avoid destroying your employees and organisations due to burnouts, braindrain and fading performance? Stop double bind-communication in your organisation!” - Such is the title of the point of view article authored by Angelika Kutz, published in May this year.

    The article by Kutz describes a presumed connection between the double bind-communication pattern in organizations and its detrimental consequences for both the employees of a double bind-organization and such double bind-organizations themselves.

    Organizational Design is the central subject in a new special volume of the Advances in Strategic Management Journal. The Editors of AiSM are interested in publishing journal articles representing a sample of the most significant empirical and theoretical developments at the intersection of organizational design and strategy.  

    In the call for papers, the AiSM Editors emphasize a special interest in work which links different disciplines (e.g., sociology, organizational economics, social psychology, history, organizational theory, strategy), blends theories, mixes methods or is otherwise particularly integrative in its approach. The Editors wish to offer scholars a chance to research topics which may be considered exploratory, risky or unusual for mainstream journals. 

    The objective of the special volume is to renew attention to foundational theories and highlight new and interesting efforts that develop and augment theories and methods in the pursuit of a better understanding of organizational design and strategic management.

    Submission Deadline: December 15, 2017

    The Role of Hierarchy in Modern Organizations

    The role of hierarchy is challenged and disputed in modern organization design, but still we see hierarchy as the most common form of organizing. In this conference, we will address non-hierarchical modes of organizing and explore the role of hierarchy in today’s organizations.

    Go Society invites you to a 3-day conference and 2-day clinic with the headline “Building Trust - Inducing Agile Organizations for Tomorrow” in Toronto, Canada.

    The theme will be the elegance and adaptiveness of Requisite Organization and its synergies with current management trends.

    The 3-day conference

    The conference will explore:

    • Day 1:  The core values (principles of design, talent pool management, the management practices) and their interconnectedness.
    • Day 2:  The relationship to other organization design approaches that exist and are emerging in our increasingly complex world.
    • Day 3:  The implications for application of RO principles to new issues facing management.

    Go Society’s new conference format will feature dialogue, discussion, sharing of ideas and experiences within contexts set by keynotes and presentations.

    The 2-day professional development clinic

    The clinic will support development of skilled knowledge by applying RO concepts to a case. The case will feature an organization challenged by digital disruption, needing to speed innovation in its customer focused value stream while working with stakeholder networks beyond the firm’s boundaries. In the past few years, the firm had established vertical RO accountabilities and now with its new strategy, it will work to refine the needed project management, lateral relationships and collaborative work culture.   

    Three prominent practitioners in the field will balance theory with client applications.

    ODC member Prof. Dr. Tobias Kretschmer from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München shares his experience with his Massive Open Online Course.

    On 9th January, 2017, the Institute for Strategy, Technology and Organization at the Munich School of Management launched a new specialization “Competitive Strategy and Organization Design”. Instead of traditional classroom teaching Prof. Dr. Tobias Kretschmer and his team decided to offer the three courses of the specialization as video-based Massive Open Online Couses, so called MOOCs. The courses are distributed in partnership with Coursera, an online platform that provides universal access to education.

    Since the launch of the first course, about 600,000 participants have signed up for the courses, so MOOCs seem to be a very effective way to share knowledge about organization design and strategy.

    “MOOCs are a completely different distribution channel compared to a typical university course. We can reach a completely different audience with it, so in a sense we are looking at a textbook case of economies of scope,” tells Prof. Dr. Kretschmer.

    “On the production side, we changed things around a bit – you cannot design a MOOC thinking you will be in front of a camera that simply records your lecture, so it was also instructive from a pedagogical point of view.

    However, one of the key factors in the decision to do a MOOC was that it was something new and explorative, which I found exciting."

    600,000 participants is very impressive. What kind of students did the course attract?

    “Anyone really. We have not done a systematic analysis of who takes part, but we have had high school students form rural US, entrepreneurs from Tanzania, FTSE C-level executives, MBA students – the lot really.”

    What did the participants pay for the course?

    Coursera’s current business model is that participants pay a monthly subscription fee (45€) until they complete the specialization. The revenue is shared between Coursera and the University.

    “However, I was less motivated by the financial potential of offering MOOCs. At the time of doing my first MOOC, there wasn’t even a business model. More important to me was, the opportunity to reach a wider and different audience.

    What is your overall experience with MOOCs?

    “I really enjoyed doing the MOOC, but it was also a lot of work. Think one full day per session pure recording time, plus preparation (you need to redo the slides) plus another day or cutting and producing. If you want to have quizzes, you have to design them too. If your institution supports you and/or rewards it, it is certainly a fun and satisfying activity. Not sure if I would recommend it pre-tenure though…” says Prof. Dr. Kretschmer.
