In line with the 2017 ODC Annual conference, this JOD Thematic Series explores the role and form of hierarchy in organizations, especially in novel modes of organizing such as collaborative communities, commons-based peer production, temporary innovation networks, and boss-less organizations.
The deadline for the submission of papers is January 15, 2018.
Both conceptual and empirical papers are welcome, and papers may address any aspect of hierarchical and non-hierarchical organizations. Topics can include, but are not limited to, the following:
-
means and consequences of reducing or eliminating hierarchy
-
substitutes for hierarchy
-
decision-making and resource allocation in non-hierarchical organizations
-
experiments or agent-based simulation studies of non-hierarchical organizations
-
qualitative case studies of the evolution of novel modes of organizing
-
purpose and role of hierarchy in future organizations
-
relationship between hierarchy and organizational performance
The Guest Editors for this Thematic Series are Stephan Billinger (University of Southern Denmark), Maciej Workiewicz (ESSEC Business School), Børge Obel (Aarhus University), and Charles Snow (The Pennsylvania State University).
