Organizing for deep innovation: three archetypes in the tech industry

Martin Gonzalez (Google)

and

Shannon Mahon (Miles 88 Leadership)

           ---   27th Feburary 2025, Thursday at 9am EST/3pm CET   ---

Sustainable innovation is highly sought after by companies in many industries, but it’s unclear how to structure organizations and workflows to create the conditions for innovation in a business-relevant way. Drawing from their experience with both tech startups and industry giants, Martin and Shannon will talk about the different archetypes of innovation—some fostering extreme autonomy akin to academia, while others emphasizing a highly product-focused approach. This talk will cover the strengths and weaknesses of each model and offer a compelling journey through the history of computer science.

Martin Gonzalez is a principal of org and leadership development at Google and author of the bestseller The Bonfire Moment. He’s worked extensively with startup founders and tech leaders across the globe on their people and org design challenges. He’s a frequent lecturer at Stanford, INSEAD, and Wharton.

Shannon Mahon is the founder of Mile 88 Leadership, an organization development consulting company that specializes in working with technical leaders. From 10 person startups to Fortune 500 firms, she helps companies address the organizational challenges of growth and scale.
