Three Levers to Evolve the Operating Model

J. Paul Wayne

Chevron, Senior Advisor, Organization Design & Member of OCD Board of Directors

 29th August 2024, Thursday at 9am EST/3pm CET

International oil companies (IOCs) have come a long way in their journey, developing awareness of Organization Design, confronting reality on the size of the gaps they’re facing – not just in terms of financial metrics, but also in health, safety, workforce engagement, and environment, from low carbon solutions to the much larger issues of the sustainable energy transition. Efforts to close the gaps had only been producing incremental change, which has proven insufficient to materially move the needle towards where they need to be. They evolved their approach from structural design rationales to a more holistic understanding of the Value Chain, and finally to a fundamental reimagination of their Operating Models. But to quote Amy Kates, they had to activate the Operating Model.

Across the industry, three key focus areas have emerged that show promise in addressing the challenges involved in realizing the potential of the new operating models, and addressing the gaps in organizational performance:

I – Relentlessly drive Process Maturity – The energy industry has always been engineering-centric as well as focused on reliability/repeatability. Process Maturity is central to the High Reliability Organization (HRO) models that accompany high-risk facilities. We’ll examine several examples of innovation in the area of Process Maturity, which is infamous for inspiring moans and yawns.

II – Identify & support a Teaming Model that delivers results – Activating - and then evolving an Operating Model implies new ways of working – new interfaces, capabilities, governance require a new set of expectations from people and from teams. Of the myriad teaming models tested across industries, a hybrid has emerged, combining aspects of several models to deliver breakthrough, step-change results and the innovation we were looking for. We will share what works - the key defining features of this emerging model.

III – Engage the whole system for effective change management – One of the biggest challenges in change is breaking away from the gravitational pull of the status quo. How do we introduce, and eventually ‘marry’ the enterprise ecosystem and the new Operating Model? We’ll review critical success factors we’ve identified that unlock the value for everyone.
