Webinar
From Big Data to Actionable Insights: Addressing Measurement Issues in Organizational Design
18th May 2023, Thursday at 12 pm Eastern Time
In this webinar, we will explore the challenges of measuring and observing organizational structures in the current age of big data and AI. We will discuss why it is difficult to study organization design and take stock of recent methodological developments that could help to solve this problem. The webinar will feature a panel of experts in the field of organizational structure, from both academia and the industry. Marlo Raveendra will start by outlining the challenges of collecting representative samples of structure in the first place, and the main issues of generating insights both within and across firms. Arianna Marchetti and Piyush Gulati will then: i) showcase recent empirical approaches to use large public databases to measure different components of authority hierarchies at scale and ii) discuss how to use publicly available text generated by organizational members to measure informal organizational structures (as in the form of corporate culture) and how it relates to formal hierarchy. Organimi will analyze current issues that corporations are attempting to solve concerning organization design and structure and discuss recent trends and evolution of organization design over time, including shifting patterns around remote work.
Throughout the webinar, the panelists will discuss why focusing on organization design and measuring it accurately is beneficial for corporations. Through a series of short presentations and an interactive session with the audience, attendees will develop a better understanding of the challenges and solutions in measuring organizational structures in the age of big data and AI. By the end of the webinar, they will leave with actionable insights that they can be applied to their own work on organizations.
