From Big Data to Actionable Insights: Addressing Measurement Issues in Organizational Design

18th May 2023, Thursday at 12 pm Eastern Time

In this webinar, we will explore the challenges of measuring and observing organizational structures in the current age of big data and AI. We will discuss why it is difficult to study organization design and take stock of recent methodological developments that could help to solve this problem. The webinar will feature a panel of experts in the field of organizational structure, from both academia and the industry. Marlo Raveendra will start by outlining the challenges of collecting representative samples of structure in the first place, and the main issues of generating insights both within and across firms. Arianna Marchetti and Piyush Gulati will then: i) showcase recent empirical approaches to use large public databases to measure different components of authority hierarchies at scale and ii) discuss how to use publicly available text generated by organizational members to measure informal organizational structures (as in the form of corporate culture) and how it relates to formal hierarchy. Organimi will analyze current issues that corporations are attempting to solve concerning organization design and structure and discuss recent trends and evolution of organization design over time, including shifting patterns around remote work.

Throughout the webinar, the panelists will discuss why focusing on organization design and measuring it accurately is beneficial for corporations. Through a series of short presentations and an interactive session with the audience, attendees will develop a better understanding of the challenges and solutions in measuring organizational structures in the age of big data and AI. By the end of the webinar, they will leave with actionable insights that they can be applied to their own work on organizations.

Arianna Marchetti is an Assistant Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship at London Business School. Her research lies at the intersection of strategy and organization. Arianna studies the interplay between formal organization design and organizational culture, and its implications for coordination and corporate performance. She is very passionate about ML and AI, and how they will change our approach to doing research in Management. Prior to joining academia, Arianna worked as a Consultant for EY in Italy. She earned her PhD in Management at INSEAD, and her BS and MS in Industrial Engineering from La Sapienza University in Rome.

Marlo Raveendran is an Associate Professor of Management at the University of California, Riverside. Her research explores the micro-foundations of organization design. Marlo studies the process of the division of labor, the influence of specialization and different types of interdependence on the effectiveness of hierarchical and non-hierarchical designs, and what impact prior interactions between actors have on reorganizations and the design of organizations. She earned her PhD in Strategy & Entrepreneurship at London Business School.

Piyush Gulati is a PhD candidate in the Strategy area at INSEAD. His research focuses on the role of human capital in resolving organizational design issues. In his dissertation projects, he is investigating the antecedents, dynamics, and consequences of the horizontal structure of the firm at different observation levels: (1) the divisions and functional units that exist at the highest level, (2) the differences in occupational domains of firm employees, and (3) within-employee diversity in their skills. Before joining INSEAD, he was a management consultant at Deloitte Consulting where he worked with corporate and private equity clients to assess, implement, and monitor post-acquisition operating model changes.

Live webinar is open to all.
