Inequality remediation vs. growth

In 2015, the United Nations established seventeen Sustainable Development Goals as the outcome of three years of deliberations on the urgent environmental, political, and social challenges that must be addressed by 2030 to sustain human systems on the planet. The goals include a broad range of sub-topics and intermediate objectives that were widely vetted and considered by stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. Through this process, the goals themselves include a number of objectives that exist in tension. For example, the goals promote climate action simultaneously with universal access to affordable energy; and they prioritize responsible consumption and promotion while resisting price increases that might amplify economic inequality and intensify poverty.
In this session, we will focus on the tension between the remediation of inequality and the promotion of economic growth. Some of the themes that may arise include (i) the implementation of innovative policies that promote job creation particularly for the under- and unemployed, (ii) the creation of green jobs in emerging sectors, (iii) the challenges, threats, and opportunities that arise for low-income workers in the face of digital advances that amplify job requirements, (iv) the proliferation of contract work and insecure employment, (v) lack of affordable housing and childcare, and (vi) structural racism, gender-based discrimination, and other forms of exclusion from opportunity.
The panel for this session will be moderated by Professor Anita M. McGahan of the University of Toronto, and will include experts with broad perspectives on the challenges of fulfilling the SDGs on reduced inequality with growth in jobs and other economic outcomes. Our panelists are Patrick Belser (International Labour Organization), Prof. Olga Hawn (University of North Carolina), and Prof. Sergio Lazzarini (INSPER Institute of Education and Research).

Patrick Belser is a Senior Economist, Wage Specialist, at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva. He is the coordinator of the ILO team that provides technical support to ILO Member states on wage policies and is the main author the ILO Global Wage Report, a flagship report of the ILO published every 2 years. He is also the main author of the very recent ILO report on “Inequalities in the World of Work” published at the occasion of the 2021 International Labour Conference. He holds a D.Phil. in economics from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex (U.K.) and has published extensively on issues related to wages and inequalities. He also edited a book on forced labour and human trafficking.
Olga Hawn is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Faculty Director of the Center for Sustainable Enterprise and Sustainability Distinguished Fellow at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She earned her PhD from Duke University, Master’s in management research from University of Oxford, Master’s in international business and BA in economics from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. Her research interests include corporate social responsibility, sustainability strategy, and international business. Her current work examines business responses to ESG issues, including racial inequality, the metoo movement, and LGBTQ issues.
Sergio G. Lazzarini (PhD, 2002, Washington University in St. Louis) is the Chafi Haddad Professor of Management at Insper Institute of Education and Research. He is currently visiting the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Sergio does research on how public and private actors interact and organize their activities to improve economic and social performance. He is founder and director of Insper Metricis, a center for the study of impact measurement and investing.
Anita M. McGahan is University Professor and George E. Connell Chair in Organizations and Society at the University of Toronto. Her primary appointments are at the Rotman School of Management and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy.
