Overview: Machine Learning (ML), and Artificial Intelligence more broadly, has been reshaping the way organizations operate and compete. A similar revolution is under way in management research, where the technique opened up new avenues for investigating organizational phenomena. In this session we will focus on what ML is, what does it do, and what are its strengths and limitations. We will cover how ML differs from the more common practice of statistical hypothesis testing and discuss regularization and cross validation procedures. We will also review the main uses of ML in managing and studying organizations.
Objective: The session will introduce the basic principles of ML and discuss their potential for academic research and management
