Certification program for AI Literacy in Organizations (CAILO)

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Certified AI Literacy for Organizations (CAILO) is a foundational certification for professionals who use, manage, or oversee artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

CAILO supports the growing need for AI literacy in academic, professional, and organizational settings. It provides individuals with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of essential AI concepts, capabilities, limitations, opportunities, risks, and responsible use.

The certification is awarded based on successful completion of an online assessment. It is designed for professionals from a range of backgrounds and does not require programming or advanced technical knowledge.

CAILO has been developed in response to the AI-literacy provisions of the EU AI Act. Article 4 requires providers and deployers of AI systems to take measures to support the development of AI literacy among staff and other people dealing with the operation and use of AI systems on their behalf. The measures should take account of people’s technical knowledge, experience, education, training, and the context in which the AI systems are used. 

CAILO addresses foundational areas including:

• Understanding what AI is and how AI systems are used
  
• Recognizing the capabilities and limitations of AI
  
• Evaluating AI-generated information and outputs
  
• Understanding the opportunities and risks associated with AI
  
• Using AI responsibly in professional and organizational contexts
  
• Recognizing issues relating to bias, fairness, privacy, and confidentiality
  
• Understanding the importance of human judgment and oversight
  
• Identifying when additional guidance or escalation may be required
  

CAILO does not certify that an individual or organization is compliant with the EU AI Act. Rather, it provides a structured way to demonstrate foundational AI knowledge as part of a broader organizational AI-literacy and responsible-use program.

CAILO is developed and supported by the Organizational Design Community (ODC®).

CAILO complements the Certified Organization Design Professional (CODP®) certification. CODP® recognizes professional knowledge and experience in organization design, while CAILO focuses on foundational knowledge of AI and its responsible use in organizational contexts.

Together, the certifications support professionals working at the intersection of organization design, technology, people, and organizational change.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

The CAILO assessment consists of:

• 40 randomized multiple-choice questions
  
• A maximum duration of 60 minutes
  
•  A passing score of 80%
  
• Three attempts included with each registration
  

The assessment is based on prior knowledge and independent preparation.
